What can one do? I need to finish reading the thread, but what can one person do? I wish I could do more for our vets.

First of all, let the congress people know that we want the vets taken care of. Then, go to the DAV or some other organization and join it! Membership, whether or not you attend the meetings, gives them the ability to operate and assist vets. Or, help them with their fund raisers. Call your local groups and see what kind of assistance they need.
