The leadership of the US Army, or at least a lot of it, are heavily invested in a ‘mission accomplished’ Afghanistan endstate Part of this is personal ego as most have served in command slots there and part of it is determination not to have another war end as the Viet-Nam War did.

The Viet Nam War ended better long term than this one did, for us. Perhaps a decisive defeat is better than US troops being used for all the wrong reasons.
