(CNN)The Army this week selected the company to build its much-anticipated new vehicle to replace the Humvee -- a multibillion dollar contract.
Oshkosh Corporation, located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, won the $6.7 billion contract to produce the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which will also be used by the Marine Corps.
The initial order will be for 17,000 vehicles, with production set to begin next year. The Army expects to have its first JLTV unit ready to go in fiscal year 2018, according to a release from the Army.
Oshkosh beat out two competitors for the final contract: defense giant Lockheed Martin and AM General, which manufacturers the Humvee. The tactical vehicle-maker will produce a two-seat and four-seat version of the vehicle, as well as a corresponding trailer.

Saw the facility on a road trip to EAA. Just passing by.
Some of those had a removable fender panel.
They made a good luge in the snow at Camp Fuji.
They get points for that, right?
Dad had this 5 ton for a while and I got to run for a little while one day. It was sold recently.

Active Duty ping.
I am sure they will, and I have no doubt that ISIS will be able to replace their hummers with these new vehicles.
Down at Ft Stewart in 1984 our Duse and Half tore up so motor pool brought us a Goat to use to haul ammo. Our last day in the field we were headed back in close to dark and decided to take it for a joy ride back through the mud. LOL It was different I’ll say that for it.
I wondered what happened to the Gamma-goat. My unit was involved in testing them in Thailand back in the early '60s.
They definitely could go over multiple terrain types, slinking and bending like a caterpillar.
I have my personal JLTV on order from Oshkosh, by Gosh, 4 seat version complete with trailer :)
We be ready!
“Anything else is something less!”
With the current CINC, I figured they picked a Prius.
LOL, or an armored vehicle complete with solar panels and a telescopic windmill on top.
We were trained on 6 by’s for our military driver’s license...back in ‘59. Versatile...
OshKosh Bgosh is owned by Carter’s.
Yep...so that even a small IED or small arms fire can kill the entire crew.
BRILLIANT!
Like they are now with the Humvees?
At this point, would those vehicles survive an IED? I think that’s the only practical question here.
Serious? Seems like this vehicle is POS.
Use the LAV in a theatre where that is a concern. Not this compromise.
I was thinking the same thing.
