Coyotes have become practically ubiquitous across the lower 48 United States, and they’re increasingly turning up in cities. The draws are abundant food and green space in urban areas.
At first these appearances were novelties, like the hot summer day in 2007 when a coyote wandered into a Chicago Quiznos sub shop and jumped into the beverage cooler. Within a few years, however, coyote sightings became common in the Bronx and Manhattan. In 2021 a coyote strolled into a Los Angeles Catholic school classroom. They’re also appearing in Canadian cities.

Can’t do that in a metro area and there are plenty inside Louisville/Jefferson county.
What is the smallest recommended caliber for taking coyotes?
They slaughtered a cat a few months ago on the street corner. Pretty graphically bloody. Makes us worry about our 3 year old grandchild playing in the yard. We have lived here since 1989. Never feared coyotes because local govt took care of this. Now they say you are on your own!
Please be careful.
They *have* grabbed little kids.
Damn gubmint DNR brought these things here.
23. A 105 mm round will do!!!
We once had a coyote in No. Va. but it ate a Democrat and died!!!
Yes… our kids have moved in along with the grands (waiting out this ridiculous real estate market)… we are very aware.
Depends on the range and the skill of the shooter. At my retirement BOL a few years ago I picked one off at a little under 80 yards with a .223 load that approximates the .22 Magnum rimfire. Maybe it was the one that killed my favorite cat, maybe not. Would not have taken the shot with that load at 150 yards.
Back in Michigan, (prior to my retiring to Ohio), a neighbor claimed he'd killed one in his farmyard with a .38 Special.
My nearest neighbor here in Ohio traps them, so I don't have the need or opportunity to shoot them anymore.
Here in the West they are semi-commercially hunted for their pelts.
Weather and timing are important but prime hides can earn a nice sum.
Not easy work, and if you cannot handle skinning them forget it.
Coyote coats are expensive.
I’ve killed several with head shots with my Savage 17hmr at about fifty yards.
How good a shot are you, and at what range?
Do you intend to harvest the pelt?
.22 LR will do it with a brain shot.
Most fur hunters I have known use .223 or a variant.
“Not easy work, and if you cannot handle skinning them forget it.”
and the skinning has to best first rate.
It is a lot like work!
YUP.
Or send them to NYC.
Sure looks like a coy dog.
Feral, and needs to be shot on sight.
In many states they offer bounties for their being killed. Some states you have to collect the skull or lower jaw for submission for bounty collection. At least they don’t require the pelt. Not too many things that collect more ticks, fleas and other creepy crawling things than a mangy coyote....
>> a pack stalked my dad one day.
>> Ours are huge.
Long past time to start taking them out in your area.
I most places coyotes are considered nuisance animals to be hunted all year with no bag limit. But they are not easy to get.
Here is Phoenix, we have “no gun discharge within city limits” law.
So they are practically unreachable. They roam the city, kill dogs, cats and rabbits.
Does somebody has an idea how to get them under these circumstances?
I lived in Denville New Jersey for about 25 years in about 8 years ago walking down my main street was this coyote looking left and looking right. Really surprised to see that animal in New Jersey. And we’ve had bear in the backyard which was kind of shocking. The one animal that scares me to death is the wild boar.
Good coyote.
They sound like demons when they yip in packs
Is this about 4-legged coyotes or the 2-legged variety?
Maybe both.
