Meet the Texas Spoiler (Debra Medina)
Congressional Quarterly ^ | February 3, 2010

The "tea party" movement is showing its strength in Texas, where activist Debra Medina is siphoning votes from two much more familiar names running for the Republican nomination for governor. The Houston Chronicle's profile of Medina is worth a read.

With less than two weeks remaining before early voting begins, Medina's campaign appears to be gathering steam; the latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows her drawing 16 percent of the vote, versus 29 percent for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who's trying to make the move from Washington to Austin, and 44 percent for the sitting governor, Rick Perry.

The Medina threat is clearly making an impact on her rivals; AP quotes Hutchison alluding to the possibility of a runoff, required if no candidate gets a majority on March 2. (Hat tip to Taegan Goddard for spotting that one.

It would be exciting if Medina were to actually make it into the runoff. I hope she has a money bomb before the priamry.

I’m as far from a RINO as you can get, so won’t say it - but the Dems do love it when we fall for these candidates.

Kay was a friend of mine 28 years ago when I helped her first national campaign in Dallas.

Since then she’s become very “Washington”. Perhaps she was that way before and I just didn’t see it.

I’d vote for Medina now.

Everyone who goes to DC comes home far wealthier than they were before.

Ask yourself why?

She’s smart and very impressive. She’s got my vote. I gave up voting for the”lesser evil” when I was presented with a choice between Dole and X42. I wrote in Alan Keyes.

If you vote for the lesser of two evils, you're still voting for evil.

Just a thought...

Saw they had a money bomb and I think she raised about 100k. That was Feb 2nd. Would be helpful to have another.

Knocking off KBH would be pretty funny. Course we still have to deal with K in the senate.

Medina, in a Rasmussen poll actually beats White in the GE.

What we don’t know is if she would beat the muslim billionaire if he was to beat White. LOL

Well if enough people fall for her she can be the candidate in November, right?

Perry has no business running for another term.

He's been in office for 10 years - shouldn't he have the courtesy to step down? What can he do in the next term that he hasn't accomplished before?

No.

GWB hasn’t weighed in and is unlikely too.

Cheney is backing KBH and Palin is backing Perry.

If property tax is repealed, what are the sources for state revenues?
I saw some previous posts stating that formal gun registration is not a Texas requirement for firearm ownership.
Can you elucidate Medina's relevant qualifications and political agenda that would compel support for her candidacy?
Obviously I am not in Texas.

That was #41, GHW Bush that was said to be for KBH.

#43 hasn’t committed to anyone.

I disagree with the contention of the article that Medina is being backed by the Tea Party crowd. I’ve seen nothing that indicates that. Medina is being backed by the Ron Paul Libertarians, since she’s also a Libertarian.

Good question.
Perry has been a rat on taxes IMHO but he has kept the state healthy for work.

All 3 candidates support 2nd amendment rights.
