***PS: I'd make an excellent choice as the cardinal in charge of the newly-reconstituted Holy Office of the Inquisition. ***

I have received quite a few resumes for that position. Do you have any experience with thumb screws?

Dear drstevej,

Frankly, my methods are far more modern than that. And innovative, as well. First, physical methods are preferred that leave no unsightly scars or mutilations, or at least leave them in places not generally seen.

Second, methods of psychological coercion are far preferable to any methods of physical torture.

The ideal goal of a persuasion session is not primarily the infliction of pain, but the manipulation of the psyche of the subject to the point where he freely confesses his sin, and readily accepts instruction and correction.

It is far more satisfying to see a subject changed so that he will believe whatever he is told, without hesitation, without question, blindly and obediently, humbly, self-effacingly, even grovelingly, than to see a subject suffer from psychological or physical torture. We are far more modern than the Inquisitors of old. Our methods are more subtle, more suave, more sophisticated, and far more certain of effect.

Of course, when necessary, we can always fall back on the tried-and-true ways. And even in these things, we have many centuries of additional experience, especially all the knowledge given to us from the opening of the Soviet and East German secret police archives.

Oh, oh, oh!!!< /hand waving vigourously> Pick me, pick me.

You'd be suprised what sort of confessions you can extract with a Black and Decker Firestorm drill and a reduced shank 3/4" bit on low speed!
