"The Flying Dutchman"

Wrong school, Mom!

There's no 'Hope'!

Flying Dutchmen Suffer First Conference Loss (1/18/03)
BOX SCORE
The host Calvin Knights road on the shoulders of their All-American and a freshman reserve to gain a 74-70 victory over Hope in the 150th meeting of these schools on Saturday.

Played before a capacity Knollcrest Fieldhouse crowd of 4,500, the Knights handed Hope its first MIAA loss (2-1) and just the third of the season (12-3).

The game was competitive to the end with 13 lead changes and five ties.

The ultimate outcome came down to the final minute. With Calvin leading 71-70, the Flying Dutchmen gained possession off a Calvin turnover. After a timeout, the Dutchmen worked the ball into Travis Spaman whose short jumper fell off the rim at :18. Calvin rebounded and Hope fouled. Free throws made the score 73-70 with four seconds left. Chad Carlson's desparation three-point shot failed giving the win to Calvin.

Calvin All-American Jeremy Veenstra (Wrigley's cousin) led the Knights with 25, including 15 in the second half. Calvin connected on 13-of-21 three-pointers, including a 4-for-4 performance by freshman Jeremy Burgin.

Senior center Don Overbeek led Hope with 16 points, but freshman Jeff Carlson was the only other player in double figures with 10. Hope's starting lineup accounted for just 37 of the team's points.

To show how fair I am, that bone headed turnover was the result of my cousin throwing the ball out of bounds during an inbound play.

After a timeout, the Dutchmen worked the ball into Travis Spaman whose short jumper fell off the rim at :18.

There was a collective gasp from the Calvin faithful when Spaman got the ball passed to him while he was wide open. No one was within 7 feet of him. The eruption as the Calvin faithful saw Spaman missed the gimme jumper and my cousin redeeming himself by grabbing the rebound was a joy to be part of.
