Who appointed Egan as his replacement? Was it Law? And, if so, what jurisdiction does he have over NY? I thought the pope himself picked Egan and made him a cardinal to boot.

Of course, I don't imagine the pope himself sits down at a computer, reviews the profiles of potential candidates, calls them in for interviews to determine their mindset before making a selection. Odds are that he relies on his advisors to make these determinations for him. Someone truly goofed!

Yes, this sadly, is true. O'Connor was always worried Egan would get in there. I loved O'Connor, he couldn't be classified as conservative or liberal, he cared deeply for the poor and unfortunate, for the working person, and he defended life and, seemingly, despised CLinton. A Catholic's Catholic, defying labels. V's wife.
