Nota bene? :-) There were vigilante bands during the tenure of Brigham Young that were alleged by the settlers to be danites. The irony is that secret combinations are a particular do not do (nothing to contradict this in the BoM) and are specifically condemned....Anyway, these fellows tended to enforce their version of Mormon Law (close to Sharia in fact) in Utah with an iron fist tucked in a steel glove. nasty stuff and BY turned a blind eye (although with 28 or 50 some wives that would be easy for him to do.....)
