Hmm. Sure like how this paragraph starts out and I don't disagree with it per se. But as odious as mental ascent in the place of brokenness is, God wants us to get beyond our sin and guilt, without delay for moroseness or morbidity. "Repent" is an action verb: Turn, quick! Get past the God forsaken cross -- outside the despised tomb and follow your victorious SAVIOR who is delighted in you, through your brokenness and acceptance of His life!
(Alas, to the extent we fail to adopt this new Life we impede our faith as his adopted sons!)
With all due respect to both Calvin and Arminius (never studied either of them much and don't feel cheated) it's all about being quick to listen to and wholeheartedly grasp and heed the Word the Spirit breaths, eh?
I think God wants us to see our sin and feel its weight..we can never appreciate the mercy of God until we see the terrible sin which he has had mercy on...Just as we can not appreciate our salvation until we see the depts of what we were saved from..
I really think that men have confused confession with repentence. Say I am sorry and go right back to the sin God will never notice..how foolish..
What can move us so that we desire God more than the pleasures of sin. What can make us run to our Saviour?.
The church has made popular an easy sort of confession.."We are all sinners" ..not seeing the personal nature of sin..OR the personal responsibilty of sin
Before we can turn and run from it (as you correctly note) we have to BELIEVE it is an ugly enemy..we have to hate it..I Think only the Grace of God can cause that to happen
God wants us to see our sin and feel its weight..we can never appreciate the mercy of God untill we see the terrible sin which he hjas had mercy on...Just as we can not appreciate our salvation until we see the depts of what we were saved from
Rom 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
2Cr 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
