When I ws reading English history, I came across an article in which it was said in 1946, and the war was over, that people fondly looked backward on 1940-41 as the happiest of their lives, when death rained from the skies and England stood alone against an implacable enemy. By contrast, in 1946, with victory achieved but with an uncertain future looming, those same people were depressed.
