Karl Barth was a theologian during the 1800's who developed a theology that was a reaction to the liberal theology. His methodology was a dialectical progression of parodox. In his reaction against liberal theology he also concluded that man could have no ability to understand God, only God through his revelation in Jesus Christ reaching down to man can man have only a partial understanding of God. Paradoxically, liberal theology grew out of the kantian philosophy that God could not reveal himself to man but that man through his reason and conscience could understand God, Barth countered that man could not understand God, that his nature was totally corrupt as to render it impossible, basically discounting general revelation, and God could only partially reveal himself because of our finite nature; therefore both theologies stemmed from the same philosophy that God is so distant from man as to be indiscernable.
