What's fairly obvious in hindsight is that we didn't need to team up with Stalin to defeat Hitler. Had we left them alone, Hitler and Stalin would have done massive damage to each other and we could have shoved both of them into battlefield graves. We were led into an alliance with Stalin by a communist president. That bears remembering. Politicians are worthless at best. At worst they are positive menaces.
The President should never have the power to ally us with a gang of devils like the House of Saud. Expecting Bush to be different from FDR in any meaningful way is a futile expectation. He's cut from the same sort of cloth as the old commie who dragged us into WWII.

As you say, it's hindsight. In the fray, I think it would be a hard call. Particularly with communications at the time so much less sophisticated. The fog of war.
