James is speaking of "showing" saving faith. Both James and Paul use Abraham as their example. Paul is speaking of Abraham's being
declared righteous by trusting God, (Gen. 15:6), James says that Abraham
showed his righteouness by his offereing of Isaac, (Gen. 22:9). There is a difference.

James speaks of a threat to our salvation which is overcome by resistance (a work). If not overcome, it results in death (losing salvation).
