Mack told me about your post yesterday, but I've been real busy.

I like your question, "used" horse:) HEHEHE, that sounds funny.
But that is actually something hard to find, but make the best horses. Now a days horses are most generally not used enough to make them very good.

I would start looking in the Bargain Post, and there are some on-line sites that sale horses. I'll try and find one that I use to look at.

If you have no experience or not much, you want to get something not younger then 10 yrs. old. Older Roping horses make good horses, Quarter Horses are generally the calmest. Personally I have not experienced much difference between mares and geldings. Some people will tell you geldings make better horses, because they don't have the breeding thing going on.

You have to read between the lines on the ads. If you go look at one, make the people saleing it get on it. Then leave and show up some other time when they are not expecting you.

Ask questions like: will it load in any trailer, will they pay for a vet check, how much has it been rode lately, ask about bad habits, cribbing, eating wood, won;t stand tied, weaving, is it spooky.

What do you want to use the horse for, trails, your grand kids, show horse, rodeo type events,??

Don;t get in a hurry. Don;t be swayed by a "pretty" horse, they can kill you as fast as an ugly one can.

It's kind of a hard question, since I don't know your expericene level, or what you want it for.

You might call around at any stables that are around you and ask if they have anything for sale. Lot's of times they do.

Hope this helps. I'll keep an eye out for something:), How far would you travel to pick one up.

Simply go to the nearest thoroughbred track and check out the horses. Many, if not most of the races at your average track are "claiming races." That means that a price tag is automatically set upon any of the horses running in an individual race. You may need to affiliate with one of the trainers registered at the track to get him or her to do the actual claim, but it could be as simple as that.
