Am I a Christian? Only by the broadest possible definition could I be classified as such. I was baptized (as an infant). I had a born-again experience (in my early teens). I have at various times been a member of different Christian churches. I do have a high regard for the teachings of Jesus, and even consider him a prophet (although the Pauline theology overlaying the gospel accounts tends to obscure this). But I do not believe the basic, fundamental Christian doctrines. I do not believe that Jesus was divine. I think he was a righteous man with a strong spiritual connection with God. I do not believe in the trinity, because I reject the idea of a multiplicity of persons in the Godhead. I do not believe in his unique sonship of God. And I do not believe that man is made righteous through him (Ezekiel 18:20). (If, however, he did indeed lay down his life voluntarily, then I believe he did so with the intent of modelling perfect love for the purpose of reconciling man to God. This ties into a variety of themes from Jewish mysticism.)
Some here have said that they believe I am saved (by Jesus) even if I am not explicitly aware of it. Some have suggested that, since I was "born again" at one point, that by OSAS God will bring me back around. Some would argue that I am "invincibly ignorant" and thus will be judged according to those standards. And some believe that I am not saved.
As for myself, I do believe that I am saved. But then I hold the universalist position that all will be reunited with God, eventually.
