Whose "flesh" and what could be expected to "profit"?
I think it means that our own bodies, our own flesh, will not profit from taking the Eucharist.
And they won't, really, other than whatever nutritional value is found in a tiny unleavened wafer. (And no you can't make pizza with it!)
Our bodies still get gray and achy and tired and worn out and dead. The flesh profits nothing.
Instead our souls, our spirits profit enormously from the Eucharist. It nourishes our souls and sees us through our lives, then it provides us with the gift of eternal life.
It even provides us with new, glorified bodies.

I think it's likely that they understood him "in the flesh" only (without the Spirit) and could not understand Him.
Do the other places in Scripture that discuss being "in the flesh" refer to "flesh" or a "human understanding" as opposed to a spiritual understanding?
