NEWGEEZER-Here are some I don't understand why fundamentalists don't take literally.

Sacrament of Reconciliation-

Mark 6:12-13  "So they went out and preached that men should repent.  And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them."

Importance of the Pope-

Matthew 16:18-19  "And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound to heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Mark 6:12-13 "So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them."

There is Protestants/Fundamentalist ministry in both of these areas.

Even if it was granted that Peter and the other apostles had this kind of establishing ministry, why presume that this authority survived the Apostolic age ?

Think of it this way.

The Scriptures say that JESUS is the chief cornerstone of the Church ... and that the Apostles are the foundation.

When you build a house (building), you complete the foundation before you begin to build any of the rest of the building.

If the Apostles ministry was foundational, and the Church was built upon that ministry ... is there any further need for any foundational ministry ?

Is it even appropriate to continue work on the foundation ... after beginning to build the main part of the structure ?

What do you think the word repent means here? Until just recently when I would come across the word repent in scripture, I always thought it meant to turn away from sin, to be sorry for my sins. I recently came to understand that that is not always the case. Repent can mean to turn away from unbelief in Jesus Christ. Such as when Peter says in Acts to repent and be baptized. I believe this is where the confusion comes from about baptism, that baptism washes away sin. But actually Peter is saying turn away from unbelief in Jesus, and be baptized to show your belief. Has nothing to do with sin in these verses.

I may be wrong about how others read this word if so I apologize.

Here are some I don't understand why fundamentalists don't take literally.

Sacrament of Reconciliation-

I don't recall seeing anything remotely resembling that phrase in any bible. Was it in the manuscripts?

Mark 6:12-13 "So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them."

Okay, I give up. What is it you think we fundamentalists don't take literally in those verses?

Importance of the Pope-

See my "I don't recall seeing..." above.

Quester did a fine job answering this one. But, again, what are you suggesting we fundies take figuratively, as opposed to literally? Are you suggesting He was literally talking to a rock? ;O)

It's also interesting to note the play on words evident in the original Greek (sorry, not Latin) language. Peter is a small stone, but JESUS is the Rock. A few thousand posts back -- or, it might have been in a different thread altogether -- someone posted in large letters, "DID SOMEONE SAY 'ROCK'?!" followed by a rather long list of Scriptural evidence supporting the well-known biblical typology of Jesus as the Rock. Surely you know Jesus is the Rock.

If He was saying He was going to build His church upon Peter, it's rather odd that only 5 verses later He calls him Satan. :-)
