When their is no solid theology, it may lead to thousands of different interpretations.

There are Catholics with wide-ranging theological beliefs, too. Must be thousands of Catholicisms, then.

No, you are wrong. There are many differnet Biblical passages that Catholics may disagree on, but all (well I should say almost all) Catholics are knit close together by a common theology. That is why you don't see much breaking away.
