Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
So God was lying to David when He said that He said that He would establish Solomon's "royal throne in Israel forever"?
If you read the verse in context, it seems clear to me that God is speaking of how he will end the exile and return the Israelites to the Promised Land.
Thus says the LORD,
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
"For your sake I will send to Babylon
and break down all the bars,
and the shouting of the Chalde'ans will be turned to
lamentations. (Isaiah 43:14)
Ruth was a convert.
But Ruth said, "Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following you; for where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God;
where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if even death parts me from you." (Ruth 1:16-17)
Paul is a special case. There is no indication given in the account in Acts, or elsewhere, that Mattias's selection was invalid, or later overturned, or whtnot. I have heard the theory before, that the apostles were presumptuous in doing so, and that God overruled them and selected Paul instead.
But I don't see any actual supporting evidence for this.
As for the 12 foundation stones, we must remember that 12 is a symbol of perfection. As I say, if we have One God in Three Persons, we can surely have Twelve Apostles in thirteen persons.
There is no disputing the rest of the OT evidence that random games of chance were indeed used to "determine" the will of God in various circumstances. Take Jonah, for instance.

You'd better believe it. :-). But I'm gonna pick and choose my spots wisely. :-)
Not at all. He just did an end-run biologically to make Mary an heir of David.
Again, the question becomes of what validity and of what tribe belongs a Jew born of no human father. I say that he is completely valid as an heir of Joseph, a member of the House of David.

Hmmm... Kinda like the Big 10.
John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

vmatt, call your office! ;o)
I say that he is completely valid as an heir of Joseph, a member of the House of David.
And by doing so you do the same thing Catholics have accused solascripturians of doing -- reading 21st century customs backwards into a 1st century mileau. There was no recognized, legal adoption process in biblical Judaism.
For asking you if you were going to share your seminar notes? I'd think it would be Mack who would hit "abuse" for my asking that! ;o)
He's too preoccupied to bother with me right now. Doin' the full court press evangelism on ya. :-)
Interesting.
I don't know if Dave was joking or not on the "game of chance" comment. It was, as far as I can tell, not regarded as chance at all, but a valid method for the exercise of God's will. This can be seen not only in the OT occurrences of the word, but also in the context of Peter's (or whomever wrote 2 Peter) use of it in the epistle.
The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. (Ezekiel 18:20)
How do you understand this, in light of your beliefs about the sacrificial death of Jesus?
Last week was speculation about Pitt joining the Big Ten. The consensus seems to be that sooner rather than later, the Big East will implode, with the ACC fishing for some teams like Miami or Virginia Tech.
Pitt is being advised to start working now to join the Big Ten. The local Staters, of course, denigrate the idea cause Pitt is a "city school" and not a land grant institution. On the other hand, one letter-writer proposed throwing out Northwestern and bringing in both Pitt and WVU. An East Division then has Pitt, PSU, WVU, Mich, Mich St. and Ohio St. If you just add Pitt, there is trouble deciding who is to be the 6th in the East. Splitting Indiana and Purdue up would seem to be unpopular, but one would need to go on either side, geographically.

We moderns are more sceptical. I would tend to regard playing dice or Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine the will of God to be "divination."

The father has no sin so Yeshua wouldn't be suffering for him. He's suffering for mine and your sorry behinds. Its called grace, mercy, lovingkindness, unmerited favor etc. etc. :-)
A rabbit going down the trail. :)
Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
