Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
SCRIPTURE, PLEASE!
Catholic Christians make extensive use of relics, including bones, of saints. Yet there are no relics of Mary's body. This is a testament to the universal belief that her body is not on earth.
Don't dig yourself a hole you can't get out of, because someday her remains may be unearthed or discovered .
Which would absolutely destroy the very foundation of the Church as inerrant. Which would be a monumentally world-changing event.
People survive change.
So. Everyone you know and trust, including your own eyes and ears, and the Holy Spirit which guides you to Truth while reading Scripture, would have been proven to have been wrong. And this "wouldn't affect" your faith or beliefs. And on top of this, the one Church that you know from you private reading of Scripture to be "wrong" on some many things is proven right, despite your own person reading of Scripture that says otherwise. And this wouldn't give you pause
Dave, I don't know how to answer you here. I put my faith in God and I deal with what he opens my eyes to. I have discovered things from yall on this post that I wasn't aware of before , that I have to accept as truth because it is grounded in scripture but I think I understand now though why you fight so hard not to examine your beliefs. If I understand you correctly you are saying that if just except any error was made then your whole church and belief falls? How frightening that must be.
This particular thread (or series of threads) began on 3/24/2001. There were religion threads before this one, including different daily threads (I remember a freeper named "Marathon" -- who is no longer here -- used to post a regular religion thread). In the old format, before FR introduced the thread navigation tools, and the ability to load smaller chunks of threads, we were limited by size to around 200 or so posts for thread. When a thread got too long, we'd make another one. There were 162 threads under the old system. Then there was a long -- around 37,000 posts -- thread, which was in the main forum. When Jim created the Religion Forum, we started a new thread and moved over here.
I got my screen name changed from "angelo" to "malakhi" about a month ago. The forum software relies upon member numbers rather than screen names. When your computer displays a screen name, it shows the name the FR forum software associates with that member number. As a result, all of my old posts, when pulled up and viewed, will now show my new name. Kinda weird, but that's how it works!
Still pretty dusty. Turned in my resume/"skills sheet" etc about three weeks ago. Could hear any time in the next 2-3 months. No worries though, everything will turn out just fine. Actually looking forward to the opportunity to pack up and move out of here. When the townhouse next to ours sold for 300k we knew it was getting too expensive to stay here (even in the suburbs). Housing prices are going up faster than my salary ever could and my son wants a pony. My back yard is 18'x40'... Becky might turn me in to the ASPCA.
I'll admit that an immaculate conception would be preferable to hot coals...
No, it makes following God's word important to salvation. You'll note that Adam and Eve were booted from eden for a single sin. There is a reason for it. There is also a reason Paul said he finished the race and that we each struggle daily. It's also why we're supposed to be filled with the Holy spirit per Mark 16 and following the spirit without fail as per Romans 8 and to meet the defined standard of John 10 to be considered Sheep. All clearly stated; but, unsurprisingly all ignored by your clergy as they know better than both Christ and the Apostles or so we're intended to believe. That and nobody on the planet can read plain directives - which adds further insult. When you ignored them and did your own thing, you had to redefine sin for both profit and to make sense of your own philosophies. It's just an endless mess that is created once you start screwing with Christ's message.
You wanting us to encourage you to be good or bad? lol
You're pretending that is the end of the story - are you not. Did not Elias die. And this isn't a trick question. It is appointed unto men once to die and then the judgement. If Elias had died instead of being spirited to heaven, he would not have been able to return. God works within his laws - not in contravention of them.
Yep, I agree.
I'll further agree that the logic of orthodox Christian doctrine requires Jesus to be fully human. If he was another, separate creation, his sacrifice would not be redemptive of fallen humanity.
For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. (1 Corinthians 15:21)
Well, Resurrection Day, then! ;o)
When mine were infants, they were in sleepers all the time. The little outfits are cute, but just aren't worth the effort!
Every Catholic church in my city is different in terms of its practices. Can I therefore conclude that they are different denominations?
. Nope. That won't work either caz JH and I figured out that it had to have occurred between dusk and midnight or He would have went into 4 nights and He specifically says 3. :')
One more reason Scripture is shunted behind "Tradition".
What are the chances that the "all" here is used in the collective sense? The distributive sense?
It would only take one exception to the rule to make "all" mean something other than what you take it to mean...
Let's see... can we think of anybody who lived prior to Paul writting that down who might fit? Anybody at all?
No.
I've got another good one. #65,536. It will be the last post on the current thread -- per John Robinson that is all the capacity the software can handle (216).
You never know what might be found in the dusty basement of the Vatican Library should the need arise. ;^)
