Go Giants!
David would roll over in his grave if he heard a fellow Jew say what you just said.:-)
JH
ROFLOL! Very clever, Jim. ;o)
Giants = Goliath
Angels = David
Giants = Goliath
Angels = David
Then this game tomorrow is very important, other wise there goes the OT. :-)
G-nite all, ZZZZZZzzzzzz JH
Since the Angels are in greater L.A. and are owned by Disney, I think that makes them the Philistines. And the Giants are Samson.
I wouldn't be too upset if the Angels did win. They are a heck of a team, play as a team, and do the little things right. Mike Scioscia is proving to be a heck of a coach.
Have you forgotton where the Giants reside? It's like rooting for Sodom. I call them the Sodom Giants (and not without reason.) And don't diss SoCal, it's where I grew up the first 11 years of my life.
Which you follow with a story that is not in the "most popular bible in the world" (I'm not really sure what that's a reference to).
I think you missed my point. If a Catholic believes that God speaks through His Church, then that Cathecism and the Scriptures come from the same Source. Dave may clearly prefer Scripture, but cannot fathom a "if you only had one" question any more than Reggie could fathom the "if you only had Christ or Scripture" example.
And, of course, your policeman example makes my point perfectly (thanks!). Because that's the parallel role of the church in the given example. It's just that you would be standing in from of the cop saying:
"I don't recognize your name in the Code. I don't see your uniform described in the Law. I don't believe that 'policeman' is a valid title at all and I do not recognize that you have any authority in this matter at all. In fact, I can cite lots of examples of people wearing that uniform acting unlawfuly, so you cannot be legitimate and should not even associate yourself with the so-called 'government' (come out of that uniform!). I once spent a couple hours a day studying the legal code books with others who disagree with your authority and that of your so-called 'judges' (that cannot refer to the 'judges' listed in the law books) and we've decided that we independently are capable of interpreting when we can go through this intersection and when 'red' truly means 'red' and when it is purely 'metaphorically red'. We hardly ever agree with each other, you understand, but we all know that you are wrong in your interpretation."

Yeah. But he's still in the probationary period, right? Does it end with grandchildren? I think that's when they loosened up on me. Until then I wasn't allowed to sleep in my own bed while they visited...had to use the couch.
Without the Catechism where is Scripture?
====================================================================================
Acts 17:
[10] The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroe'a; and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue.
[11] Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessaloni'ca, for they received the word with all eagerness, examining the scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
If the Catechism tells you something which cannot be proved by examining Scripture where are you?
====================================================================================
Maybe Augustine has some influence with you.
ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO* (354-430)
"In those things which are clearly laid down in Scripture, all those things are found which pertain to faith and morals." (De Doct. Chr. 2:9)
"Whatever you hear from them [the Scriptures], let that be well received by you. Whatever is without them refuse, lest you wander in a cloud." (De Pastore, 11)
"All those things which in times past our ancestors have mentioned to be done toward mankind and have delivered unto us: all those things also which we see and deliver to our posterity, so far as they pertain to the seeking and maintaining true religion, the Holy Scripture has not passed over in silence." (Ep. 42)
"Whatever our Saviour would have us read of his actions and sayings he commanded his apostles and disciples, as his hands, to write." (De Consensu Evang. 1:ult)
Of course it is understood I am a hypocrite for picking and choosing words of Augustine which are to my liking. (Per the ultimate authority, SD).
Without Scripture where is the Catechism?
Lost and empty

Just fine, but uninterpreted. And God didn't do that in the OT, what evidence is there that He does it in the new?
My daughter is a Social worker..she works with "children at RISK" ..she is SURE it has to do with weak parenting and a failure to make positive expectations sure to the kids..she really does tell the girls that often...
There was a slight bump in the road recently when her husbands brother had a baby out of wedlocked..Hannah 7 keeps asking How that could be he is not married:>))..My daughter changed the topic..alot *grin*

I think it appropriate to post Acts 17:10-11 one more time:
What Scriptures do you suppose the Beroean's were examining and from what, where, or whom did they get their interpretation?
Likely the Septuagint, I would imagine. Along with the "Word" that the apostles brought with them. Which of course was entirely on the authority that God had given them.
What NT Scriptures do you think were written at the time? Who told them that Christ was the one the OT stories refered to? What OT verse says "the story Paul & Silas brings you will be True"?
And if you think the only "interpretation" they had was from individually reading the Scriptures under the guidance of the HS, you haven't studied much about how OT Jews handled their theology. Some questions to spark your memory (not to imply you were there or anything. You're not that old):
Did they have anyone who had authority over them in their faith?
Did they have anyone who spoke for God?
Were there any written authoritative "cathecisms" on the OT?
Were they free to interpret the Scriptures themself? Or could they only sit in the synagogue and watch a priest read it to them and tell them what it meant?
Scripture citation, please?

Lord Jesus, open the eyes of my heart! Let me see the length and breadth and height and depth of your great love!
O Jesus, show me the length of your love in the great distance you came to save me. You left your throne in heaven and came to earth, taking a human nature like mine so you could show me how to live for your Father. I wish I could have met you halfway, but you came all the way to me and saved me.
Lord, show me the breadth of your love in your mercy and compassion. Your mercy is so wide that in one act of sacrifice you won forgiveness for every sin this world will ever see. Your love spans the entire earth, touching men and women from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. Your arms of love are wide enough and strong enough to hold the whole world in a loving embrace.
Jesus, show me the height of your love in the wonderful plan you have for my life. You have lifted me out of the miry pit and set my feet upon a rock. I know that one day you will lift me up to heaven to live with you in happiness for all eternity. Each day, you want to raise my heart and mind to a new level of spiritual alertness and readiness to do your will. O the heights from which I had fallen--and the heights to which I have been lifted up by your great love!
Finally, Jesus, show me the depth of your love in the blow that your cross and resurrection have dealt to my old, sinful life. When you descended into hell, you took my fallen nature with you and left them there. When you rose, you poured your Holy Spirit into me and empowered me to turn from sin and live a life of service in your kingdom. Your love took you to the lowest place, just so you could raise me to the highest place.
"Lord, let my knowledge of the length and breadth and height and depth of your love cause me to see myself as you see me. May it cause me to see others as you see them. Let me be a sign to the world of this love, so that everyone may experience it."
----------
God bless.
