Franklin Graham Rebukes James Talarico: The Bible is Not Silent on Abortion

Pastor Franklin Graham sharply criticized Texas Democratic state Rep. James Talarico over his false claims about the Bible supposedly being silent on abortion.

Graham is calling it “an absolute lie” for the U.S. Senate candidate to claim the Bible does not condemn killing babies before birth.

Graham, CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, responded after Talarico, the Democratic nominee challenging Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in November, asserted that his Christian faith somehow allows abortion.

“I trust Texas women to make decisions about their own bodies, to shape their own destinies in consultation with their family members, their doctors, their faith leaders. I don’t believe that’s a place for government,” Talarico said in a recent interview. “Jesus never talks about abortion. The Bible is silent on abortion.”

This isn’t the first time the Democrat politician has lied about the Bible.

Graham directly refuted that assertion.

“Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico couldn’t be more wrong! The Bible is not silent on abortion as he claims — that’s an absolute lie,” Graham wrote on social media.

“God commands us, ‘You shall not murder’ (Exodus 20:13). Abortion is taking a life — it is murder.”

Graham pointed to additional Scripture affirming the value of unborn life.

“The Word of God tells us we are created in the image of God and consistently underscores the value of human life. Jeremiah 1:5 says, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…’” he added.

The Ten Commandments, given by God to Moses in Exodus 20:13, state plainly, “Thou shalt not murder.” Pro-life Christians note that this commandment applies to the unborn, whom Scripture describes as fully human and known by God before birth.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes clear the connection between love for him and obedience to God’s commands, saying, “If you love Me, obey my commands.” Therefore, violating the commandment not to kill or murder is an express act showing hatred towards Jesus.

The Bible contains numerous verses that underscore the value of preborn life.

Among them: Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you”; Psalm 139:13, “You knit me in my mother’s womb”; and Genesis 1:27, “God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.”

Pro-life advocates echoed Graham’s rebuke.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, accused Talarico of trying “to hide behind Jesus to defend abortion.”

“‘The Bible is silent,’ he says. Yeah, that’s not how this works. The Bible is explicit. God didn’t stutter when He commanded us not to kill innocent humans,” Hawkins wrote. “Scripture makes it completely clear how He feels about preborn babies, explicitly stating that He knit us together in the womb and knew us before we were even born.”

“The spiritual gaslighting here is unreal. You can twist the words all you want, but the Bible isn’t silent about killing innocent humans who are all created in the image of God. And, [Talarico], you will be held responsible for this perversion of the Gospel,” she continued.

Talarico’s comments have drawn widespread condemnation from Christians who argue that the Bible’s commands against murder and its descriptions of God forming life in the womb clearly condemn abortion as the taking of innocent human life.

Indeed and it’s my understanding that Talarico’s own mother chose life. She had escaped a domestic abusive relationship to have him and raised him as a single mom.

Not if you draw on the principles encased in Scripture that it is silent.

It even give a principle to prioritize the life of the mother over the child, if there is a conflict. A real one and not a conflict of convenience.

““I trust Texas women to make decisions about their own bodies, to shape their own destinies in consultation with their family members...

A baby on board is another body so this is not ‘her body’.

Isn’t that baby a family member? Where was the ‘family member’ her baby considered?

How can you trust the woman’s ability to make a good decision when she’s already shown she made a decision to have sex without considering the possibility of getting pregnant from that action and later flip-flopped when faced with the inevitable consequences for her actions.

Unless she just thinks nothing at all of the life she took part in bringing into the world, her family member.

What sort of ‘good decision maker’ is that?

There are theological areas Mr. Talarico can be challenged on IMHO.

I saw a debate with Obama one of the participants. He was asked directly if he had voted against the bill that protected aborted babies that were born alive. He lied, said he had not.

I wish Franklin Graham would speak out more.

He is a man of Truth. I think he actually turns heads.

In the month of November, each Catholic church has a “Book of Remembrance”. In this book you can write the name of you loved ones who have died.

I am afraid that there will be nobody to write my name in the book. I think the Good Lord may have a pen...

In Roman times abortion was achieved by the “exposure of infants”. An unwanted child was left in the country to be carrion. Kenith Scott Lattourette in his history of the Christian Church said the practice disappeared where the faith took hold. I’ll go with the first century church.

This was common throughout history.
I always thought if I was born 150 yrs earlier I could of ended up in a snow bank or selling apples on the street.
Very greatful to be here.

Just a thought, but it would seem to me that Talarico would just need to sit down & shut up upon certain matters.
