CHRISTMAS BIBLE-ART EPISODE #6 of 33

MARY VISITS
HER COUSIN
ELIZABETH

L U K E
CHAPTER 1

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and ELIZABETH WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. BLESSED IS SHE WHO HAS BELIEVED that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”

#1 (by Bloch) is famous, and appears in a lot of illustrated Bibles and Prayer Books. It’s very nice!

Of Course, the Tissot and Copping are also excellent, but, I really DON’T like #16.

That’s what makes art so interesting! We all have our favorites and our “not so much”.

Yeah, I don’t dare leave out #16—that might be the one that the Spirit can use to finally get that weird FReeper saved....

Good Idea!

There are plenty of “weird Freepers”! 😁

Some folks think I’m weird! LOL!

And, You’re RIGHT. The Holy Spirit can use anything He wants to open someone’s eyes.

Uganda. I had wondered about her but hadn’t (yet) looked into her. Gloria Ssali has such a unique vision—it will be fun getting to know her in heaven.

I really like how you 'balanced' the presentation here, with Elizabeth's hands spread in joy in the first one, and Mary's (ditto) in the last one. (Did you mean to do that? or was it by 'accident' read: Holy Spirit?)

The other prominent commonality in 99% of these is the use of hands - to represent 'speech', or exclamations of joy...

Also, I did notice the donkey, or two...:))

We can never go wrong, John, by crediting the Holy Spirit; after all, we are saved by grace....

Speaking of the Spirit: could He be guiding you into the acquisition of donkey(s)?

This time I surveyed the paintings looking for how the artists depicted the ages of Mary and Elizabeth. Some used gray hair, some used wrinkles.

What I noticed was how prevalent headcoverings were. They were the style in both the Middle East and in Europe at the time of the paintings. They convey the modesty of the time and of the women involved.

Mary was just starting to show and left probably to protect her family from shame. Luke 1:39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,

This was after the annunciation, so she was probably no more than 1-3 months along.

Elizabeth was “in her sixth month” upon Mary’s departure from Nazareth and probably six months pregnant upon Mary’s arrival, and we are told Mary stayed “about three months.” So, she saw the birth—how could she not stay?

Luke, the circumspect physician, doesn’t say so, but I think the implication is that Mary—very naturally—wanted to make sure Elizabeth birthed a boy.
