I didn’t know this until I saw a documentary series on this but the inquisition was still in place in what is now Italy up until the late 1800s.

That’s talking about the “Roman Inquisition,” which was later called the “Holy Office,” then the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and now the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. IOW, it exists today.
