Working both ends against the middle.

How can they justify something they deny happened?

If they try to justify it, it’s a tacit admission that it happened, therefore they can’t then logically deny it.

You're overthinking it.

You can deny falsehoods and myths ABOUT a historical event (or a historical institution) without denying the existence of said event or institution.
