A Catholic school teacher in Washington state says she will not be returning to the school where she has taught for years for the next academic school year because she is marrying a woman.
Parents of students at St. Luke School in Shoreline are upset by the school's decision to let go of a talented kindergarten educator who has been with the school for four years.
Karen Pala's contract was not renewed by the school's head pastor, Father Brad Hagelin, due to her plans to marry a woman over the summer.
In the text of a letter sent to parents, Hagelin says Pala serves in her role not just as a teacher but as a minister. He said if her personal life choices do not align with the teachings of the Catholic church, then she will no longer be considered a good role model for students.
Hagelin, who is due to leave the school at the end of the current academic year after more than a decade in his position, wrote: 'In these difficult situations, a pastor might find himself unable to sign a new yearly covenant (contract) in good conscience.'
A former teacher at St. Luke, Tracy Rathke, who worked in the classroom for a quarter of a century, said she was incredibly 'disappointed' about Hagelin's decision.
'It's a really sad way for him to leave 11 years at this parish,' she told Fox 13 Seattle.
'No matter how you wrap it, it’s hate, and it’s not something that I want my former students to live in, it’s not something that I want the kids that are going through this school right now to live in. It’s not the message that we should be sending,' she added.

True dat!
Right on, to your entire comment.
I’m sure she keeps her private lesbian life to herself and doesn’t tell 5 year olds about how wonderful it is every friggen minute.
She knows she’d get pig piled and violated by muzzies if she did it there, besides which it’s currently popular, in, and fashionable to harass and insult Christianity.
Sounds reasonable
Good for Father Hagelin
Freedom of Religion, plain and simple.
The “gay” woman had no right to expect a truly Christian organization “had” to employ her in their religious based organization, if she wanted to “identify as gay”. She is free to go teach somewhere else.
Obviously no longer a role model.
It’s a Catholic school. What did she expect?!
If you’re going to work in a Catholic school, follow the Catholic rules. If not, out you go.
It’s not much different than a vegetarian working at a hamburger joint. Maybe you don’t want to serve any meat-based meals. Well, okay. Then out you go.
Unless you’re the Pope. He doesn’t have to follow any of the rules of the Church and they still let him lead it.
“I’m sure she keeps her private lesbian life to herself and doesn’t tell 5 year olds about how wonderful it is every friggen minute.”
It gets even better.
Will she teach about the four sins that cry out to Heaven for Vengeance?
Of the 4....here is number 2
Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry which has come to me.” (Gn 18:20-21)

My thoughts exactly.
Preferably at a Marxist university.
Truth.
Exactly.
There can be no better argument for the concept of term limits than Pope Francis. And he might hang on for years to come. So he’s capable of doing much more damage.
Pope Benedict retired at age 85. Even that is old, but it would have been nice if Francis would have followed Benedict’s example. And all future popes, too.
Francis is now 87, by the way.
This current usurper calling himself the pope is a heretic, make no mistake about that.
Finally a Priest worth his salt!
I’d fired the teacher as well.
What’s sad is parents being upset about it.
