The woke professor tearing up Baylor University continues his wild ride of unrestrained progressivism, recently interrupting church liturgy to unironically point out that the title of a centuries-old hymn is “sexist” for containing the word “brethren” and that he’s edited and moved around parts of it as to not cause offense.
The last thing that I’ll mention is because I’m Episcopalian, I don’t like to interrupt liturgy. Liturgy is holy. It works when it’s together. We have a song that is 200 years old, which will be our opening hymn. I am well aware that the title Brethren We Have Met to Worship is sexist.
So please know that I am not trying to say, ‘hey, let’s have a conference about racism and diminish women.’ That is absolutely not the message I’m intending to send.
So I want you to know this, and you will probably notice if you’re familiar with the hymn. I have edited it and moved verses around so that sisters, you are just as important as brethren.
The hymn was composed by George Askins, a Methodist minister and itinerant preacher and published in 1819. The original version reads:
"Brethren, We Have Met Together"
Brethren, we have met to worship,
And adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power,
While we try to preach the word?
All is vain, unless the Spirit
Of the Holy One come down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Brethren, see poor sinners round you,
Trembling on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving;
Can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers, see our mothers,
And our children sinking down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Sisters, will you join and help us?
Moses’ sisters aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners,
Who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior,
Tell him that he will be found;
Sisters, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Is there here a trembling jailer,
Seeking grace and filled with fears?
Is there here a weeping Mary,
Pouring forth a flood of tears?
Brethren, join your cries to help them;
Sisters, let your prayers abound;
Pray, O! pray, that holy manna
May be scattered all around.
Let us love our God supremely,
Let us love each other too;
Let us love and pray for sinners,
Till our God makes all things new
Then he’ll call us home to heaven,
At his table we’ll sit down.
Christ will gird himself and serve us
With sweet manna all around.

Sweet mama? Maybe?
Some people just need a beat down. It’ll help them get their minds right.

Several years ago, “Black Hymnals,” so-called because of their black cover, began to appear in the pews of United Church of Christ. These hymnals contained many well-known hymns, but the lyrics were all rewritten to eliminate any “sexist” language—”father,” “son,” “brother,” etc. were removed. Also removed was any reference to God as a king. That church has backslid a long, long way since its members were known as Pilgrims and Puritans.
Last time I checked Brethren means fellow Christian. These people are idiots looking for an insult to whine about
For those who LIKE the old versions of the psalms and hymns, and aren’t horrified by words like brethren, I put my 5th great uncle’s Psalms and Hymns up on the web so people can enjoy the original 1814 edition.

As a devout Southern Baptist, I have to say that my heart is saddened at this. I know Baylor has strayed away from being a renowned Christian school and floated ever increasingly toward being more secular, but I suppose not even a “Christian” school is immune to this woke mind virus. I’m not angry. I’m just saddened and broken-hearted at the falling away of God’s own, even though the Bible tells us this will happen in the last days.
If brethren is sexist, cistern should be too!
It makes me angry till I think of that Bible verse that goes something like “they think they are wise but they are dumb as shit” Now yes that is not the verse but you know what I mean!. I’m too upset right now to look it up and give a direct quote. This hymn was fine the way it was and them changing it the way they did only makes them look like imbeciles.
Watch for this guy to get the bum’s rush out of Waco soon.
When I was singing in a Catholic choir some hymns with male references rewritten to a neuter state were in the new hymnals.
We need to re-open up the insane asylums....
The people are nuttier than a fruitcake...
Bretheren is inclusive of all, including women. Brothers on the other hand is not. Which is why most say Brothers and Sisters. The guy is a moron.
Have been a Baptist for 75 years. This year we ditched it for a conservative Presbyterian church. The hymnal is so wonderful; very few of the hymns were written after 1900, and they’re full of strong theology.
“Brethren, We Have Met to Worship” is a wonderful hymn.
All the Baptist churches in our area sing insipid airy-fairy drivel. Most don’t even have hymnals, but flash lyrics on big offensive screens. (How are sight readers supposed to sing the tune?)
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man... —Romans 1:22-23
