When someone asks you “what is [the nation of] Israel?”, how do you answer?
I am unaware of any Biblical definition of ‘nation’, maybe ‘medinah’? Hebrew ‘am’ is ‘people of’. An Israelite is born of a Jewish mother or a convert according to traditional Jewish law.
