BEAL CITY, Mich. — A Beal City author, who has been openly gay for decades, is surprised to find himself at the center of controversy.
He read his children's book to a pre-K class at a local private Catholic school, and a week later, it appears the pastor of the associated church issued a public apology to parents and parishioners — not over the content of the book, but rather, the person reading.
“I came into a classroom to share the joy and love that I have for what I created, and to share that with other people. Why my sexuality has anything to do with that? Anything? It makes me mad.” Dominic Thrasher was brought to tears when sharing the events that have unfolded over the last week.
"For a second, he made me want to stop," Thrasher said. "I didn't want to do it anymore.”
Thrasher called Wednesday one of the worst days of his life. A week before, he was all smiles.
“It went amazing! Oh my gosh, it was so much fun," he said.
Thrasher, 44, grew up in Mt. Pleasant and made the transition from acting to writing during the pandemic.
“I’ve always wanted to, I just was scared to start," he said.
Thrasher has now written a series of books called The Adventures of Cece and the Sheriff.
“Sheriff is my dog and Cece is my sister’s dog," he explained. "They were playing in my room when I was trying to figure out what to write about and it went from there.”
Since March is National Reading Month, Thrasher was invited by his friend to read his first book to her pre-K class at St. Joseph the Worker School.

They always want to be around kids. Always. Maybe the dark reality of their chosen lifestyle makes them yearn for a more innocent reality. Their only hope is to repent and turn away from their existing lifestyle.
Glad we agree. Now explain to me why that writer of a harmless children's book should have been publicly shamed due to his sexual orientation?
You've conveniently ignored that question.........
Understand exactly what? That a man who wrote a children's book about two dogs was actually a gay man?
Gosh, who would have put that thought into their head if it actually was during the reading? All they knew was they were being read a story about two dogs........
All the aftermath is crap.
Maybe from this post?:
Notice the comment from the pastor:
To my knowledge, the book and any related conversation was appropriate for our students. A St. Joseph teacher was present in the room at all times.....
My guess is that the author was the flouncy and lisping type and chose to make an issue of being sixed. And except for his account, there is no reason to think that he was publicly embarrassed.
I read the post. It was meant to reassure parents that nothing bad came of this event. It was not insulting or hateful. In this time of “drag queen reading hours”, it was necessary.
It doesn’t identify the person, the date, or the book, or that the guest was the author of the book. During Reading Month there could have been many people who were invited to read to the kids. The author is the one who linked himself to and publicized the post that he claims humiliated and degraded him.
Drama. Queen.
My $0.02
Love.
