New York's iconic St Patrick's Cathedral has claimed it was duped into holding a 'scandalous' funeral service for a transgender activist celebrated in the mass as 'the great whore'.
The Catholic cathedral which bills itself as 'America's parish church' has been ordered to hold a 'mass of reparation' after hundreds of scantily-clad admirers danced in the aisles for former sex worker Cecilia Gentili.
The self-proclaimed atheist died at 52 on February 6, and organizers have admitted they kept her identity 'kind of under wraps' when booking the mass with cathedral authorities.
Now the cathedral pastor has issued a groveling apology to his parishioners, thanking the 'many who have let us know they share our outrage'.
'The Cathedral only knew that family and friends were requesting a funeral Mass for a Catholic, and had no idea our welcome and prayer would be degraded in such a sacrilegious and deceptive way,' Father Enrique Salvo said in statement. That such a scandal occurred at 'America's Parish Church' makes it worse.
'That it took place as Lent was beginning, the annual forty–day struggle with the forces of sin and darkness, is a potent reminder of how much we need the prayer, reparation, repentance, grace, and mercy to which this holy season invites us.'
Gentili, who was born in Argentina, took up sex work in New York City after moving illegally to the US and struggling to find a job in Miami.
In 2009 she was arrested on drug possession charges and imprisoned at Rikers Island, but freed with an ankle bracelet after a judge determined she could not be imprisoned safely with either men or women without risk of attack.
But she was granted asylum in 2012 and became a prominent campaigner for LGBT rights and HIV prevention.

Has FR become a HAVEN for anti=Catholics and ATHEISTS?
“Has FR become a HAVEN for anti=Catholics”
Yes basically.
What sect of religion are you??? I will BET you either DON’T ANSWER or you will LIE! TELL US WHAT ALL, PLEASE!!
My issue with the Catholic rank and file is that they are naive and trust evil people.
They did not create the problem—but they have not fixed it either.
It sure does seem that way......very sad.....discouraging, too.
I do not follow any organized religion.
None of them have earned my respect.
From the top down, the Catholic church is a disgrace.
I miss Cardinal O’Connor. He would not have permitted it. He wouldn’t even permit Pat Schroder to speak there because of her view on abortion, and O’Connor had to be dead for the Clinton to get in.
A funeral is not a sacrament (deceased persons can't receive sacraments, for one thing). As long as the decedent wasn't a "manifest public sinner" and there's a reasonable belief that they (and their survivors) would be okay with it, a non-Catholic can have a Catholic funeral.
I think the "no manifest public sinners" rule was broken in this case however.

Family friend. Pastor at the USNA back in the day
He would not have allowed it. He refused to open the doors of the Cathedral refused to take part in the St Patrick’s day parade one year
He stood for the faith, the Church and for Jesus. And that is all they are tasked to do. They can all quit whining and just have a relationship with Jesus.
Clean up your own house—before getting angry at those who notice it is dirty.
I looked at the beginning of this video, but cannot bring myself to watch the rest. It is clear that the priest and clergy did not know that this was going to happen until it was underway. They didn’t expect the hijacking of the beginning of the service or the theatrical performance that ensued. IMHO, there is no way that the elderly priest knew ahead of time who this person was, let alone that he wasn’t a she. The friends of the deceased admitted that they weren’t forthcoming about that little detail.
Funerals are not researched and investigated like weddings or other sacraments. People are given the benefit of the doubt and if someone says the deceased was a Catholic woman who wanted a Catholic funeral, that is going to be accepted.
Once the mass was underway, I’m not sure how it could have been stopped without causing a “hissy fit” for lack of a better term.
Should the priest just have walked away? Probably, but in this case, given the size and composition of the “audience” present, I think he was “damned if he did (see “hissy fit” above) and damned if he didn’t (see Church-condemning comments here). The immediate plans to rededicate the church are a good sign that this was not condoned.
This particular event should be taken as an attack on the Catholic church, and should draw the condemnation of the people who orchestrated this farce, not the people who were fooled by it.
I know there are priests who sinfully support the alphabet agenda, and I will fight against those wherever I find them, but this does not appear to be one of those cases.
In the long run, God will not be mocked, and the gates of hell will not prevail. Trying to deceive God and His Church into bestowing blessings is a dangerous practice, so I will pray for the deceased and all of the people who participated in this deception as well as for those who were fooled by it.

Still reme.ber when TWA 800 went down and he was at the airport comforting the family. Clinton still president called him and told him he was coming there. O'Connor told him, if he showed up, he would leave. Clinton never showed up.
I recall reading about a Catholic church in CA. that on Halloween had the eucharistic minister dressed in costumes. One dressed as Satan. If I recall correctly they had an exorcist come to purify the church.
I AM CATHOLIC.
HOW DARE YOU. THEY INVITED THE DEVIL INTO GOD’S HOUSE AND HAVE NO SHAME.
That sort of thing is really annoying. No, it's not "America's parish church". It's a cathedral in a city that most Americans have no desire to visit. Get over yourselves.
Yep
My two favorite sayings about the attacks on the Church lately are “Be gone! You have no power here” and “This too shall pass.”
And I pray lots of rosaries.

PS. Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, who are becoming much too ordinary IMHO.
Perhaps a client?
I agree. The problem is it could be true.
