Some of the most effective criticism of the cultural trends in our country tends to come from Reformed theologians and ministers. In 1964, Rousas Rushdoony, a conservative Presbyterian author, wrote The Messianic Character of American Education, where he decried the secularist drift of public education. Francis Schaffer, a Presbyterian minister who established a retreat for Christians in Switzerland called L’Abri, wrote several books in the 1960s and 1970s pointing out the rise of secular humanism in American society. Neither Rushdoony nor Schaffer lived long enough to see the America of this decade, but they would not be surprised.
