"It would have been a public relations disaster for the Vatican to sack Bp. Rey after the backlash it is facing after firing Bp. Strickland," a priest from the diocese commented. He adds, "This is a face-saving strategy, but it nevertheless demonstrates the pope's dictatorial attitude."

Doesn’t the Pope realize that American “traditional Catholics” is the American Catholic church? Enough of these good people have already left the church because they find acceptance in other churches. If he continues to drive more traditional Catholics out of the Roman Catholic Church, he will have no Church at all. Or, is that his plan?

JP II did something similar with Hunthausen in Seattle years ago. The difference was that Hunthausen was a lefty heretic, and was given the co-adjutor because of his “weak doctrinal leadership”. He was given an auxiliary with special powers, Donald Wuerl (yes, THAT Donald Wuerhl), and a co-adjutor, Thomas Murphy.
