My wife’s favorite. Had to take her to a live performance.
It didn’t kill me.

Ideologically, a masterpiece, yes indeed.
My Fair Lady is apolitical but intensely personal, with humor, charm and staging.

I have not seen My Fair Lady since I was a child. I would like to see it again.
Does it have a scene at a horse race track and the women are wearing extreme hats?

1.
It Happened One Night: Frank Capra's 1934 gem, with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert--first film to sweep the Academy Awards' five major categories: Best Screenplay / Director / Actor / Actress / Picture. Greatest romantic comedy ever (Turner's Ben Mankiewicz says, "They're still chasing it ninety years later"):
2. Random Harvest, starring Ronald Colman and Greer Garson. It is entirely her film. She'd have won the Oscar but instead they gave it to her that same year, 1942, for Mrs. Miniver--she was much better here.

Those two with Greer Garson both have World War 2 as a backdrop, as does
The More the Merrier (free on YouTube). It's another splendid romantic comedy, starring Jean Arthur and Joel McCrea, with Charles Coburn winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Finally (maybe), Father of the Bride, with Spencer Tracy in the title role and Elizabeth Taylor as the cause of all the fuss. My favorite Tracy, and that's saying something.

I ordered My Fair Lady and It Happened One Night from Barnes & Noble. I did not see Random Harvest. I have had awful experience with Amazon so I avoid them. I shop ChristianBook a lot but doubt I will find secular movies there. I will keep looking.

My Fair Lady is long. Don't give up on it at the Intermission like my friend and his wife did. The second half rocks. "Just you wait...."

I saw that the Blu-ray is two disks. And it was on sale.
I do not mind a long movie.
And, I can watch a good movie repeatedly, which is why I do not mind purchasing them.

By the way, with your high intelligence, demonstrated frequently in your posts and exemplified by your analysis of The Sound of Music, you will appreciate the several themes presented in My Fair Lady.

too sweet
I am looking forward to seeing it again after so many decades. This time I will be seeing it with grown up eyes.
I saw Ben Hur as a pagan child and did not see it again until last year. I was astonished how much I gleaned from it as a Christian adult. So, I watch it at least once a month. And enjoy it every time. Ben Hur pointed me to the movie Quo Vadis. There is no way these movies would be made today.
