The Berean Jews did not. There was no church in their city yet and they did not yet believe so there was no *church* authority to interpret for them.
Scripture is clear that those JEWS searched Scripture carefully themselves to see if those things were so.
Yes, but I said "the Jews" meaning overall, as conditional obedience was enjoined (as it is to civil powers as well) to those who sat in the seat of Moses.
Which the NT church actually began in dissent of, following an itinerant Prophet and His disciples who had no more sanction from those who sat in the seat of Moses than did John the Baptizer. Who the common people held to be a prophet indeed, and heard the Lord Jesus gladly.
Who established their Truth claims upon Scriptural substantiation in word and in power, while not negating the teaching and magisterial office, yet not as possessing ensured perpetual magisterial veracity, but which their veracity resting upon the same weight of Scriptural substantiation in word and in power, which are credentials of true disciples (and the Lord opened the minds of the disciples to Scripture, and gave them power, and still does both overall),
And above all, that of true apostles. Glory to God.
And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things? And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me. And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. (Mark 11:27-33)
David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly. (Mark 12:37)
But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. (2 Corinthians 4:2)
But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, (2 Corinthians 6:4-7)
