Just in my lifetime there was the 1967 war, Comet Kahoutek in the 70s, a couple other comets since then including Comet Elenin (at least one FReeper expected Jesus to be riding behind it), the Lucy in the Sky event of September 13, 2017 (which was then adjourned to October 2018) also closely watched by several FReepes who donned their Rapture best for the occasion.
