WOMEN IN THE BIBLE
AN ADULTEROUS WOMAN

JOHN 8

Jesus appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

“No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and LEAVE YOUR LIFE OF SIN.”

Yes, much better. Thanks, Alba. I guess I wasn’t troubled by the inferior quality because I had the two clear details. Just infernal laziness.

I’ve always thought that what Jesus wrote on the ground was the verse Deuteronomy 22:24.

you must take both of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death—the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he has violated his neighbor’s wife. So you must purge the evil from among you.

Polenov was a remarkable Russian painter. He summarized his vision of life as: “Art should promote happiness and joy”. Indeed!

That’s certainly possible. From the outcome, however—assuming it was Scripture He wrote—perhaps a better possibility might be, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice” or something similar.

Regardless, God chose not to reveal to us what Jesus wrote. Instead, all we have is the spectacle of Jesus taking time for due consideration of some type before He addressed the crowd. Indeed, who can doubt that the time he thus absorbed was designed to calm the passions of the rockholders?

So, that calm, deliberative, reasoned process remains our example.

i can think of a few artists who would have benefited from adopting that attitude.

I would normally agree with you, because that is a reasonable supposition on the verse. However, I believe none of the Pharisees and scribes cared one whit for mercy in this situation, they wanted to find Jesus in a fault. But having the possibility of themselves being stoned for their misdeeds was an outcome they were not interested in. Jesus already had shown He knew many things about people and they could have deduced He knew something about them, especially if He was writing that particular reference.

I am saying that God deliberately chose not to tell us what Jesus wrote so that we would focus instead on Jesus’ process, which presumably included consulting the Holy Spirit. God wants us to emulate Him.

Art should relate a story of emotion.
