WOMEN IN THE BIBLE
REBEKAH,
ISAAC’S WIFE

GENESIS 24 & 27

GOD CHOOSES REBEKAH
AS ISAAC’S WIFE

Abraham said to the chief servant, “Go to my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac. The LORD, the God of heaven, will send his angel before you.”

Then the servant left for the town of Nahor. He had the camels kneel down near the well; it was evening, the time the women go out to draw water.

Then he prayed, “O LORD, give me success today. See, the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that a girl says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for Isaac.”

Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out. She was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”

“Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking.” So she drew enough for all his camels. Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD.

The girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things. Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring. Laban answered, “This is from the LORD; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the LORD has directed.”

So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,” she said.

So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

REBEKAH MEETS ISAAC

Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev. He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching. Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

REBEKAH DECEIVES ISAAC

When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son. Isaac said, “Go hunt some wild game for me, so that I may give you my blessing before I die.”

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father. Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies.”

Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins. Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

He went to his father and said, “My father.”

Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.” Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him. “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked. “I am,” he replied.

Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

So he went to him and kissed him. Isaac blessed him and said, “May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.”

what other site anywhere affords the wealth of variety of interest and expression that FR offers?

I have prayerfully considered other websites for posting this series, but so far the Spirit has stayed mum.

Well God bless you for following after the life and peace of the Spirit.

May we, like Jesus, learn to do not our own thing, but God’s thing while we’re here no earth. Great reward (and opposition) here on earth and great reward in Heaven. God bless.

Good Morning Dan, and happy day to all.

An epic story with eternal implications.

Tissot’s and Dore’s work probably come closest to how these events really appeared.

Each one is appreciated Dan; Thank You.

Tissot and Doré can usually be relied on to do exactly that.

Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.

And there you have it. The world's first Purim costume.

This stuff always starts out small, but then...

Purim codes everywhere. A man saying "I love you" [אני אוהב אותך] = 502

Rebekah was way ahead of her time in dressing up Jacob in Esau's Sunday Best.

Psalm 133

1. A Song of Maalot of David; Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity:
2. It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that runs down upon the beard, Aaron's beard, that runs down to the hem of his garments:
3. Like the dew of Hermon descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life for evermore:

Like the dew of Hermon descending upon the mountains of Zion...

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there
I'm east bound just watch ol' Bandit run...

I once heard a representative of the Jewish community being interviewed on the radio on the topic of Purim. "What is the significance of the Purim holiday?" asked the radio host.

Explained the Jew: "Just as the Irish have a springtime drinking holiday called St. Patrick's Day, so too the Sages instituted Judaism's own springtime drinking holiday called Purim."

Absurd.

Now for the Real Explanation

To begin, we first need to define the concept of "laughter."

Drink 'Till You...

On October 16, 1946, Julius Streicher, one of ten Nazi members sentenced to hanging for the crimes against humanity after the Nuremberg trials, was heard to sarcastically remark "Purimfest 1946" as he ascended the scaffold.[18] According to Rabbi Mordechai Neugroschel, there is a code in the Book of Esther which lies in the names of Haman's 10 sons (Esther 9:7-9).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esther_9#Links_to_modern_history

"Purimfest 1946" *was* Saint Patrick's Day.

Who's laughing now? 🤣

When added up, the letters in Hebrew for “blessed be Mordechai” and “cursed be Haman” equal 502.

Speaking of brothers stealing each other's drinking songs:

I scandalized my brother
While admittin' that he sang some pretty songs
I'd heard that he'd been scandalizing me
And Lord, I knew that that was wrong.
>>>

If we ever get to heaven boys
It ain't because we ain't done nothin' wrong
We're in this gig together
So let's settle down and steal each other's song.

Don't Cuss the Fiddle ~ Kris Kristofferson - from the Who's to Bless and Who's to Blame album

Larry remarked over on the song link,

"Wow. Complete rip off of Good Hearted Woman. Or is it vice versa?"

Meaning of the name Rebekah
BDB Theological Dictionary does not translate Rebekah. Both Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names and the NOBSE Study Bible Name List render the name: A Rope With A Noose. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names quotes Gesenius who suggests that this name denotes a woman who ensnares a man with her beauty. But although the Biblical occurrence of this name has to do with much, not with the snaring of a man by beauty. The name denotes merely a tying up of cattle, both for their own protection, the establishment of their home and to keep them from wandering off. Within this name lies the notion that individuals are placed together by something higher or smarter than they.

The name Rebekah literally means Tied Up but more specific (and more friendly) is Secured.

https://www.abarim-publications.com/Meaning/Rebekah.html

Within this name lies the notion that individuals are placed together by something higher or smarter than they:

"The leprechaun is said to be a solitary creature, whose principal occupation is making and cobbling shoes, and who enjoys practical jokes."

REBEKAH -- ISAAC'S WIFE

To begin, we first need to define the concept of "laughter." Laughter occurs when the unexpected happens. A toddler puts on her father's big shoes -- and we laugh. The president forgets his lines in a speech -- and we laugh. When two contrary elements are juxtaposed, the sudden surprise catches us off guard. And the more unexpected it is, the funnier it is.

Isaac never got the joke, and Esau certainly wasn't mirthful. What I wonder is whether Rebekah's duplicity came as a surprise to her husband of two decades.

individuals are placed together by something higher or smarter than they

My wife and I knew positively from the outset that God had matched us--indeed, part of our first date was our discussion that we would never divorce. Forty-six years ago.

Congratulations. That's quite lovely.

Isaac's soul must be joyful that it all works out in the end.

Seems to me like Esau actually got the higher blessing, just that takes a while for things to click, I suppose.

From Jacob's blessing:

Genesis 27:28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

Compared to what Esau got:

Genesis 27:39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven **from above**;
