		LOT’S DAUGHTERS SEDUCE THEIR FATHER

Lot and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Let’s get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him.” So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

		MRS. POTIPHAR FAILS TO SEDUCE JOSEPH

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

But he refused. “My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison.

Jonathan swift wrote a verse about heaven:

We are God’s chosen few,
All others will be damned;
There is no place in heaven for you,
We can’t have heaven crammed.

I think he might been playing on the idea that some self proclaimed saints (or rather pharisees) don’t want “the vile” folks to be saved and spend eternity with them

An interesting thought problem is trying to identify who might be surprised to discover me in heaven.

Anytime I have works by both Orazio and Artemisia on the same subject—perhaps you’ve noticed, Alba—I always show his first, in deference to his seniority.

While I admire the more refined, inspired and elegant style of Orazio, there is a definite Caravaggio influence in Artemisia paintings, full of drama and emotion. Did you know she was the only female pupil of Caravaggio?

Orazio and Caravaggio were close friends. Her father encouraged and guided her painting but she also worked with Caravaggio and with Tassi, the painter who abused her.

Picked out an excellent Caravaggio yesterday for a future episode. It was striking how much his work stood out from the others.
