Virgin Mary Barbie and Jesus Ken dolls draw ire in Argentina as creators face death threats

An artistic duo has once again come under fire and received death threats in Argentina for depicting religious figures through a series of Barbie and Ken dolls.

Emiiano Paolini and Marianela Perelli came up with a Barbie Virgin Mary and a Ken Jesus doll, which were recently on display for sale at a toy store in the Buenos Aires town of Lujan.

The Barbie in question symbolizes the Our Lady of Luján with an embroidered mantle and a crown. The Ken doll was modeled after Jesus crucified on a cross.

Paolini and Perelli initially introduced their concept in 2014 as part of the exhibition, 'Barbie: The Plastic Religion,' in which the iconic Mattel doll was reimagined after religious figures.

The collection included 33 Barbies who were converted into versions of the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Luján, Christ and other religious figures.

However, the duo's artistic representation of the Catholic figures drew the ire of faithful followers as violent menaces rained down on Paolini and Perelli.

'We receive threats from various parts of the world. It's crazy,' Paolini was quoted at the time. 'They've misinterpreted our work.'

The pair's work is inspired by lowbrow art, an underground visual movement that was born in Los Angeles in the late 1970s.

The duo figured they were not doing anything disrespectful because, according to Paolini, 'religion always represented the virgins with the women who were the most beautiful.'

It's believed that with the arrival of Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' movie, Paolini and Perelli sought to take advantage of the film's global popularity and reintroduce their exhibition.

Why don’t they try doing a Mohammed Barbie - what, they won’t? Why? They skeered?

Oh, right... because it would be deemed blasphemous to muslims but it is ok to mock Christianity.

‘xactly, cowgirl

There is no God like our God. He is both awesome and intimate. Close and everywhere. Just and merciful. And, we, the church, are his bride.

I’m not sure these religious-figure Barbies are to mock Christianity. I think it’s a matter of interpretation. Remember, we have conquered death. Well, maybe not me completely. There are times I relate to the suffering of Jesus, Messiah ben Joseph. At these times, I really need the triumphant Jesus, Messiah ben David. Barbie, to me, means you can be anything you want to be. So, to me, Barbie means you can see beyond pain and suffering to the glory of the risen Lord.

It’s Argentina. Do they even have Muslims there. Why have a product that no one will buy. Lots of Christians in Argentina so perhaps they thought it would sell.
