There is a note on the museum website that this painting is not currently on display, so it’s probably in storage.

IT WAS ACQUIRED BY THE MUSEUM IN 1900.

I’m going to take a wild guess and theorize that the original painting was photographed for insurance purposes and then stored away. Maybe many years ago.

The NEGATIVE was then used for making the pictures on the website, but the person doing the printing not being familiar with the languages shown printed the picture backwards.

Just a wild guess...............maybe it was painted that way by Tissot?................

I think that’s probable.

Good detective work.

Christ came as a Servant

He came first to a manger in the humblest of surroundings. But His departure was even more humble: the Conqueror of Death and Savior of Mankind rises utterly without fanfare before a tiny audience of befuddled fishermen.

Hello Dan, and happy Art Friday to all.

Many people here are very interested in Tissot’s work, which depicts ‘the suffering Servant’ willing to drink His cup to the end.

Praise be to God, and thank you Dan!

We'll see that on Monday--or is that really the end?

the superhuman strength of Christ in carrying the heaviness of the cross

the weight of all sin nailed to the cross

heartbreaking and humbling indeed

Powerful and horrifying. Brings home what He suffered for us.

But it never occurred to me that the Greek and Latin inscriptions on the Cross would be written right-to-left, like Hebrew.
