Just finished reading Anna Karenina in a new translation. There is a lot of conversation between the characters, upper-class Russians mostly, so they talk about politics, the Arts, and Culture.

There is a whole conversation about a new Bible Illustrator.

The footnotes say it was Gustav Dore they were describing. I didn't have to go to the notes to figure it out, as the characters argued over the detail, realism, and Biblical accuracy of the illustrations. As they talked, Dore’s wonderful illustrations sprang into my mind.

Dore’ made an Impression even on a Russian Orthodox Count. So much so, that he was included in the Epic novel.
