Doré is among my wife’s and my favorites, as an illustrator. We were given a gift years back of a print which is among our cherished things, for both the artistry of Doré, but also the kindness of the giver. Thanks for posting.
Ol’ Gustav is a giant among artists illustrating the Bible, in their inner circle. Only Tissot and perhaps Michelangelo worked harder at it.
Beautiful paintings! Thanks for the post.
My favorite too. His etchings are epic. There are many fine etchers, but when I think etching, I think Gustave.
Dore’ remains without equals as a supremely gifted illustrator. His prolific work is so detailed and imaginative, a pleasure to study.
It really is a pleasure to study it. So much detail that one can real,y appreciate the artists thought process and passion for creat8ng fine art. Some of the modern paintings today we just glance at, because they don’t contain much apart from eye catching eye candy, but his works you can really get lost in studying them.
Well said, Alba!
Certainly is a spectacular viewpoint from Dore.
Several are noted to be illustrated into my storyline.
Thanks as always, brother; continue to see the Light as you are lead by the Breeze.
Good Morning Dan, and a glad midweek to each one who loves ‘Bible art’.
Dore’s work is so exciting. You can easily study each piece, and know from which story it is drawn ( no pun intended =:^)
Great to see so many who know Dore’s art, and appreciate his skills.
This ministry is an oasis, Dan; thank you.
Like your ‘new’ tagline Dan; nothing lifts truth, like the Word of God.
Jesus likened the Spirit to the wind when educating Nicodemus.
Leon, one fine day we will meet Gustave in-person.
thank you! - amazing how many of these are the first image you think of for a particular Bible story. One missing is David slaying Goliath, which is understandable given it is a bit gory.
There is, of course, "nothing new under the sun."
I don’t recall offhand if Gustave painted that scene or not. But please understand that these retrospectives are not exhaustive: I selected what I considered to be their “best”.
He sure did, the Light and the Water being Him...
The wind as Nicodemus’ parable, the GENESIS Breath of creation, and Elijah’s gentle breeze, THAT is the sign of the Spirit of the Lord (the Father’s breath).
Quick reference: 1KIN19: Elijah after killing Jezebel’s prophets and fleeing into the Wilderness with angels of the Lord (read: serving Yeshua) and after an angelic affirmation of sustenance, traveled the ever-coincidental-not-coincidental forty days and forty nights to see the Father and get direction/protection. He takes cover in a cave of Horeb, the Father’s mountain, and the Word comes to him and asks his business with the LORD telling him (basically) to meet the Father when HE arrives...
1KIN19:11 Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks in pieces, but YHWH was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the YHWH was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but YHWH was not in the fire....
1KIN19:12 And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave...So when he received the gentle Breath, Elijah knew that the other wind, quake, and fire were imposters and only went when it was truly the Father.
Per your reference:
JOHN 3.2-3: (Nicodemus stated the chapter before “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him” YESHUA replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
Wait. He answered the true question on Nicodemus’ mind. So Nicodemus followed this up with, “How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
JHN3.5 YESHUA answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of WATER (drink of Yeshua) and the SPIRIT (drink of the Ruach Hakodesh).”
3.6 “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the SPIRIT gives birth to SPIRIT.”
3.7 “You (...Pharisee Nicodemus, wise council...) should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
3.8 “The WIND (SPIRIT) blows wherever it pleases. You HEAR its SOUND, but you cannot tell ‘where it comes from’ (past) or ‘where it is going’ (future). So it is with everyone born of the SPIRIT.”
Nicodemus is in shock with “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
YESHUA reiterates 10 “You are Israel’s teacher, and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still YOU PEOPLE do not accept OUR testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the SON OF MAN. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the SON OF MAN must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life IN HIM.”
All of this to say I love the distinct iterations of OT promises matched with NT promises.
Keep doing the hard stuff, Dan, my brother.
When the NT text I am illustrating contains a clear allusion to OT prophecy or promise, I have made it my practice here to highlight that. For example, in Jesus' talk with Nico He references the Brazen Serpent, so I do, too.
