«Chapter 12»

King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.

The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.

Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating.”

I’ve been lucky enough to see St. Pewter’s CHAINS in a Church in Rome ....San Pedro in Vincolii!!

There are many favorites today. Of interest #47 by Graziani,an artist very much interested in the play of light and color, derived from the Venetian tradition.
Stom, Murillo, Barbieri, better known as Guercino. His paintings have originality and are very lyrical.
Among the stained glass windows, love #83 by Burne-Jones!

By Jesus, not by an angel. As Jesus quoted Isaiah, He proclaimed liberty to the captives.

I find Graziani’s composition to be excellent: Peter and angel fill the canvas....

And Peter is not distracted by the angel but seems to be in prayer for the miracle God gave.

Was wondering whether the method God used might still be plainly visible and apparent, such as a broken chain-link or shattered padlock. If I were able to inspect the actual chain, I would look for that. Of course, in the absence of a physical cause--the text is silent on this point, indicating only "the chains fell off Peter’s wrists--then the explanation becomes extradimensional.

I love #57, from the awkward experiments in perspective, to the Moorish influence in the guards’ armor, to the anguish on Peter’s face. It’s a little time capsule of Spanish art history.

Well, go to Rome to that CHURCH and across the street are the STEPS of Pontius Pilates Palace that Jesus had to climb !

The chains that had bound Saint Peter were given to Pope Leo by Empress Eudoxia (wife of Emperor Valentinian III).

According to tradition, when the pope held them next to the chains from Peter’s first imprisonment in the Mamertine Prison in Rome, the two chains miraculously fused together. San Pietro in Vincoli was dedicated in 442 to house the two chains that bound Saint Peter. They remain fused together and are kept in a reliquary under the main altar in the basilica. Thanks, Alba. There doesn’t appear to be a physical cause, so my presumption becomes that the miracle was extradimensional, of the same type as Jesus walking through walls.
