J O H N «Chapter 20*» Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

How do they think about ‘being filled with the Spirit’ or being ‘born again’ ? Oh, they believe--that we are crazy, religious fanatics, Jesus freaks.

I will be interested in her response to your observation, but I do note this: in the first Tanner, #16, John has not yet entered the tomb, still standing outside in the darkness. In the second, #23, they have entered and the emphasis has shifted, perhaps accounting for the stylistic difference. What I have noticed about Tanner’s works is that he seems to favor dark scenes.

I do have editorial control here, with final say over who gets displayed. Let’s just say that I can be as ruthless as necessary.

I came in through his Southern genre paintings, and stayed to admire his religious art. This is probably his most famous:

Got it! Was just musing that it’s remarkable that an American painter from what was the edge of the world in those days, entirely self-taught, rose to be president of the Royal Academy, King’s Painter, and many other honors. . . including being mezzo-tinted and engraved all over the place.

True! I apologize for not making myself clear. It is absolutely wonderful that a self-taught artist from the American frontier can produce works like this.
Look up his "Ascension" when we get to that point.

By necessity, I work weeks ahead of publication. The Ascension is in my rear-view mirror—and West is included.

Since this thread is outdated and so is unlikely to be widely seen, I'll treat you to a sneak-peek of its title. Considering the subject, it seems impossible to go over-the-top:
