HERE IS THE MAN |
Good Morning, Dan.
Mary-Lou! As always, I’m grateful for your presence here.
Thank you once again for these latest paintings. They are, at the same time, incredible yet difficult to view.
The one by LUIZ MOTA and the last one especially...
Great paintings, some disturbing but they indicate the reality of Jesus torture and suffering.
#1 Tissot
#6 Munkacsy
#39 Cigoli
#40 Ciseri
#41 Mironov
#26 by Luis Mota Oficial is the most realistic. His body was broken.
I must report that they get even tougher to view for a while yet.
That last one is by Mironov. Some of us have become huge fans of his work, with very good reason. There are more of his coming, which I commend to you.
I agree entirely. My take on Pilate’s meaning when he said, “Look at him!” is to display how savagely they had mistreated Him. Mel Gibson’s portrayal does justice to the reality, but I have been very disappointed at the effete representations of most artists, showing a nearly unmarked Savior.
Thank you, Alba.
Part of my enjoyment of your presentations is the presentation of new artists. I had never encountered Cigoli, “a painter of considerable intellectual accomplishment and a friend of the great scientist and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), was the key artist in Florence in the late sixteenth century.”
I hardly knew any of the artists when I began, but commenters like you are educating me. I’m still an art ignoramus, but now I can at least fake it a little.
He does not disappoint here.
I agree - Matthew makes plain that Pilate was trying to save Christ, both because he knew he was innocent and because of his wife’s dream. “Ecce homo!” - “Behold what you have done already - “
I was willing to post Matsys’ despite his disfigurements, but I rejected one of Bosch’s as being offensive in the extreme. So, we can argue which depicted the rabble more grotesquely, but when the rubber met the road I found for Bosch.
The majority of these religious paintings were commissioned by the Church. They were intended to foster meditation on Christ’ sacrifice and not to be shocked by all the blood and gory details. For myself the painting the other day by Bouguereau was much more impactful than a broken body covered by blood. Remember also that artists worked within the established traditions.
Good Morning Dan, and good morning to each of you.
#1 Tissot
#28 (Artist unknown)
#34 Ciampelli
#40 Ciseri
Greatly appreciate all of the comments and teaching.
Thank You Dan.
Excellent etabeta; well explained indeed. Thank you.
It's interesting that the Nederlandisch painters are the ones who went completely off the rails into grotesquerie. Wonder why?
I forgot to note that Tissot seems to fall into the "show no mercy to Pilate" category. His Pilate is effete, weak, and mocking. Not a tough call at all. The Pilate of Scripture should set us all wondering, "What will I do at my time of decision?"
