Amazing art.
Though I suspect that the prodigal son was very thin and sallow, not the good looking youth many artists pictured.

Yes, starvation is not known for improving one’s looks (although I suppose supermodels would beg to differ).

Mary-Lou! I continue shamelessly stealing paintings from you—grabbed a half-dozen yesterday.

One of the great teaching by Jesus, the unending love of a father, a lost son who, having squandered his fortune, is filled with remorse, prays for forgiveness and returns to the father humbled and hopeful. It is the story of humanity with a loving Father waiting for us to return to Him.
#5 by Salvator Rosa, a fascinating and complex personality of the 17th c. Italian Baroque period. Accomplished artist, poet, musician and actor, his paintings have a romantic poetic quality.

To me the symbolism is profound: the Father represents God, the Prodigal is the Gentiles, and the other son is the Jews.
And will they welcome the returning Gentiles? Jesus leaves us hanging....

Good morning, Dan! Thanks very much for the splendid array of Biblical Art - I particularly liked the Dürer.

Good Morning Dan, and happy Friday to each gallery visitor.
An important teaching from Jesus Yeshua, Savior:
#5 Rosa
#14 Swan (here, he must be considering his options)
#15 Rembrandt; love his sketches
Thank You Dan, for preparing the gallery for visitors.

Thank you etabeta. So many fine painters during that time; could they earn a good living?

Do I hear your opening bid on that Dürer, Tom? Will you start the bidding?

Leon, while touring the gallery, please don’t touch the art!

I daresay I’ve come across more of Rembrandt’s sketches than any other artist’s.

I was thinking the same thing as I was going through these…I thought to myself, there always seems to be a Rembrandt here.

I'd guess Tissot is second.
Sometimes artists do "studies" to prepare for a work, but often they don't actually tell the story, so I omit them. Here is an example I had yesterday by Doré on Jesus' arrest:
I'm still deciding whether or not to include it.

That is a fascinating depiction. Quite dark and chaotic.
