Rembrandt, the truly great master. #25. Gustav Doré, is the best of all of the images shown, actually telling the whole story in one image with everyone’s emotional state probably very accurately represented. #27 is well done too. Would be nice to know who the artist is/was.

I believe #27 is by the artist Harry Anderson.

We have encountered his work before. Remember Jesus on the edge of the lake calling to the apostles? He is a splendid illustrator of the Bible. His touch is soft, there is always a serene aura to his work.

The Polenov (12, 13) has not been mentioned, I like the perspective here and the action inherent…he catches the scene at the very beginning, before, it seems, Christ even has a good idea of what is happening.

In mathematics, when one proves a theorem he puts QED at the end to claim success: “Thus it is demonstrated”.

Thanks, Scott, for mentioning and critiquing it, my hands-down favorite.

Nice Going etabeta; you are right indeed! What a prolific artist; we’ve seen his work all of our lives, but I didn’t know his name.

#27 my favorite today
So, what is Jesus writing?
Names of the women that the accusers might have adulterated with?

Whatever He wrote is significant. They all came to test Him, but whatever He wrote made them drop all their stones and walk away, the oldest men first.
IIRC there are only three times in the Bible that God writes, and always with His finger.
The Ten Commandments on stone
the writing on the wall in Babylon
and now with this adulterous woman
Like all the other passages in the Bible, this one has so many layers that we can never unpeel all of it. The Book is far from boring.

disclaimer
I do believe that God wrote all the Bible, whether through Moses, David, prophets or disciples.
God employed scribes.
Very few times we witness Him doing the writing.

John 8 is a questionable passage, not appearing in the earliest manuscripts. Modern Bibles generally include it (but with that caveat), so I did, too.
So, I treat everything in it with skepticism.
