CHAPTER 2

Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

Those would be my choices, too.

I love the way Tissot shows the bigshots absolutely engulfing the Boy, Who is not at all overwhelmed.

And Polenov offers something of a unique view, showing Jesus sitting casually in soft light--He was enlightening them.

Dore’ at #11; #21 Tissot and #33 Polenov are my favorite among other favorites. In the Tissot we see the learned men crowd around the young Jesus. The modest garments of the child contrast with the colorful headdresses and flowing robes of the doctors of the temple. They marvel, one scratches his beard, but they listen to this child who enumerates his points on his fingers. It’s gripping and moving to me.

The temptation Jesus faced! After setting straight all the learned ones, surely Satan tempted the 12-year-old with pride. Reliance on the Holy Spirit enabled Him to face down the Tempter just as He had the crowd around Him.

My grandmother had a print of #5 (Hoffman) in the back bedroom. When I was a child, I loved doing a “sleepover” with that painting of Jesus looking over me.

My sister found one just like it in a thrift store in Maine.

So when Ii visit, it once again gazes down on me.

Hand motion/pointing is used to denote 'talking' it seems. In many of these works, many ppl are talking 'at once', or, it may be extended conversations/debate/analyses...

...see especially #16, Van Baburen, a LOT of 'hand jive' going on there...even foot jive *grin*, with a sort of suspended motion (is the book about to fall over? pages fluttering, or will the foot kick it back upright?)

I like how Galli, at #32, shows the stillness of hands, listening to Jesus. Excellent.

'Doctor(s)', derived from Latin 'docere' = 'to teach' (see also 'docent')...

#30 He Qi: I guess not all would choose this artist, but I really like the style and colors. His website is nice, he is highly educated and often shows his work in the USA.

#30 Polenov: love the depth, and the architecture of the Temple.
