‘Morning!

Good to see you again.

It’s a lot easier to wade through the begats small bites at a time.

Two random thoughts occur to me at this point.

IF I recall correctly, and I recognize I may not, Judaism is passed through the mother, if your mother is a Jew, you are a Jew. The same doesn’t apply if a Jewish man marries a shiksa, any issue is regarded as not quite a Jew.

Second point, the lineage breaks at Joseph, as Jesus is not his natural born child. If God Himself is your father, any earthly male lineage is moot, isn’t it?

We know now of Jesus’ divine Father, but the Pharisees certainly were ignorant. They couldn’t handle that truth.

Excellent point! Speak to where the students actually are, not to where you think they should be.

Though Joseph is not the biological father, he retained all the tradition and heritage of the tribe of Judah.
Perhaps God picked Joseph because he knew that Joseph would serve Jesus and Mary very well.

It’s rather like a running joke all through the Gospels: again and again Jesus claims kinship with the Father—which we readers understand from Matthew’s and Luke’s accounts—and repeatedly the scribes and Pharisees stumble over it.

Thank you. I meant to explicitly invite everyone to respond precisely because of this sort of additional insight.

Not a bit. It arose here, in fact.

There are of course two genealogies of Jesus Christ, just like all of us - Dad’s and Mom’s. (In this case, Joseph was Jesus’ step father.)

The genealogy of Joseph gave Jesus the legal right to inherit the throne of David, and the genealogy of Mary gave Jesus the ability to take away the sin of the world as the sinless Son of God the Father and the physical right to inherit the throne of David.

The difference in the two genealogies begins with the sons of David. Solomon is in Joseph’s genealogy (Matt. 1:7), whereas Nathan, not Solomon, is in Mary’s genealogy (Luke 3:31).

“With God, nothing is impossible”. Luke 1:37. Thank you Jesus.

Cogently stated, Jim—thanks.

I always get a kick out of David naming his son Nathan after his wonderful accuser. To me, it’s as though Jesus’ legal authority flows through the earthly giant, Solomon, whereas Jesus’ moral authority flows through the moral giant, Nathan.

Joseph was the young Jesus’s earthly father by adoption I guess. The genealogy of Jesus given in Matthew and Luke speak of a placement in history and not myth at least to me.

This is great! I can see lots of work went into compiling artwork for the genealogy of Christ.

Well, a whole lot more work went into actually painting the artwork. And surely Michelangelo saved the day!

But I had fun doing it.

Yes, he was quite inspired and inspiring.

I was blessed to live in Italy for three years as a Navy brat and saw the Sistine Chapel when I was twelve. Even at that easily bored age, I was amazed at the beautiful artwork.
